eThekwini Municipality - RECORD NUMBER OF VISITORS TO SUSTAINABLE LIVING EXPO2015-08-17 The Sustainable Living Exhibition has succeeded in turning a portion of eThekwini residents 'green' as it enlightened and emphasized nature's significance through conservation. Over 14 000 visitors' streamed into the Durban Exhibition Centre this past weekend, 14-16 August 2015, to enjoy the City's premier greening event.
The Expo was hosted by the EThekwini Municipality and KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and was hailed a great success. EThekwini Mayor, Cllr James Nxumalo expressed his happiness at people heeding the call to adopt a sustainable lifestyle. "One of the ways in which the Municipality is trying to encourage people to achieve the vision of EThekwini being Africa's most caring and liveable City by 2030 is by encouraging people to start taking action. That is why the Sustainable Living Exhibition was created, to showcase the things that various people, NGOs, schools and other government departments are doing to make our world a better place," he said. The Mayor encouraged all who live, work and play in eThekwini to start making a difference in their own lives, their neighbourhoods, their communities. "One of the aims of the Exhibition is to inform residents of Durban's dream to become a sustainable City for future generations," he said. The Exhibition Centre was hive of activity over the past three days with workshops, demonstrations, networking and presentations of all things related to creating a city which cares about the environment and humanity too. Exhibitors showcased creative use of waste material, turning them into functional items. There was a wealth of knowledge shared on energy saving, water conservation, food gardens and health and wellness ideas. The Inanda, Ntuzuma, Kwamashu (INK) Area Based Management launched a book at the Expo titled, "The State of Local Institutions Report 2015" which tells the story of 25 organisations in the INK area which aims to support the sustainable social and economic growth of the communities. Visitors to the Expo were also informed of the City's strategic plan to support sustainability in local communities. The GO! Durban stand had a snaking queue as people waited to have their feet massaged and 'refueled' as the City's Integrated Public Transport Plan and the use of public transport was promoted. The Durban University of Technology Arts students' showcased fashion garments made out of various recyclable materials such as paper, cardboard, plastic and packets. The Exhibition was exciting and engaging, accommodating all ages. Visitor Margurete Fulle, said she was impressed by the Expo. "I love that rural projects have been incorporated and have been given an amazing platform for exposure. I am definitely going to support the projects such as the smocking of kids' dresses. This type of skill is scarce and has been neglected yet it serves the environment well. The Expo has been exciting and is important for Durban. I am also happy that all age groups are accommodated and that this exhibition is well coordinated. Well done eThekwini!" Fuller said.
