eThekwini Municipality - HISTORY MADE AT THE 4TH BRICS INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION CONFERENCE

2015-11-12

The South African Competition Commission signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with its Namibian counterpart at the 4th Brics International Competition Commission yesterday, 11 November 2015.

The historic agreement will see the two Commissions working closely together in the future. It is the first agreement of its kind to be signed by either organisation.

Speaking at the event, held on the sidelines of the BRICS Conference, South African Commissioner for Competition Commission Tembinkosi Bonakele described the signing of the MOU as significant.

“I am grateful that after a long period of cooperation and partnership with our Namibian counterpart we are able to finalise it. It is great to consummate the vibrant relationship between the two Commissions,” he said.

Bonakele said this was more than just the shaking of hands.

“We need to work together on the ground with the various cases both Commissions are working on. I am glad this relationship will be meaningful,” he said.

Mihe Gaomab II, Chief Executive Officer and Secretary of the Namibian Competition Commission said it was a historic day for them as it is the first agreement of its kind to be signed by both Commissions.

“I am glad that we will be working closely together. I express my profound gratitude to everyone involved,” he said.

The BRICS Conference currently underway at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre ends tomorrow, 13 November 2015. The conference is being held in South Africa for the first time under the theme: “Competition and Inclusive Growth.”

Minister of Economic Development Ebrahim Patel, KwaZulu-Natal Premier Senzo Mchunu, MEC of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs Mike Mabuyakhulu and eThekwini Mayor James Nxumalo will be speaking at the event today.
