eThekwini Municipality - ETHEKWINI CARES ABOUT PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES

2015-12-04

People with disabilities, particularly women, face enormous physical and attitude barriers to equal opportunities in the workplace. Compared to non-disabled persons, they experience higher rates of unemployment, victimization and extreme poverty.

The Municipality will therefore be hosting a Disability Awareness Day to raise awareness on the challenges faced by People with Disabilities (PWD). The event will take place on Monday, 7 December 2015 at the Durban City Hall, Main Auditorium.

The Municipality has set a target of employing more people with disabilities.

Chairperson of Governance and Human Resources Committee, Cllr Nondumiso Cele said: “People with disabilities form part of our society and they have the right to be treated with great care and be protected. They should not be deprived of any opportunities because of their physical condition.

“They are also human beings and have the ability to perform many functions with competence.” Cele said the awareness day came at the right time since International Day of People with Disabilities is commemorated in December.

Members of the media are invited to attend and cover the event. The details are as follows:
