eThekwini Municipality - HAMMARSDALE TO HAVE A NEW TELECENTRE2015-12-08 Entrepreneurs in the Hammarsdale area and surroundings will soon have a telecommunication/Internet Cafe centre allowing business in the area to collect and submit tender document with ease.
These were words of commitment from the Minister of Telecommunications and Postal Services, Dr Siyabonga Cwele, during an Information Imbizo held in Hammarsdale yesterday, following concerns raised by entrepreneurs for the lack of support and access to services that enable them to be more competitive. In his speech, Minister Cwele said that the country is faced with three major challenges of poverty, unemployment and inequality and that government believes that small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) are the only solution to these predicaments. “SMMEs can be the main driver of growth, job creation and of course socioeconomic development for our nation. It is programmes such as this one where government intervene to see how small businesses, mainly in rural and township areas can be equipped with modern technology to be able to improve their business markets,†said Cwele. He added that communications today is instantaneous, there are huge amounts of information that move through the digital media, and the concerns raised is an indication that we need to do more to advance small local businesses in order for them to become more locally and globally competitive. Present at the Imbizo, were high profile leaders from various Information Communication and Technology (ICT) Agencies, who shared effective and low cost ICT services they offer, which can assist businesses to improve their business and easily reach their markets. They encouraged young people to be more involved and familiar with the ICT sector now that technology is becoming the way to transform our economy and improve the quality of lives in our society. Cwele added that government is aware that some challenges faced by small businesses; is lack of infrastructure. We are working with local government to identify old buildings which can be used by small businesses to run their operations.
