ethekwini Municipality - PUBLIC URGED TO BE ALERT TO HOUSING TENDER SCAMS

2015-12-10

EThekwini Municipality urges the public to remain vigilant to tender scams being carried out across KwaZulu-Natal involving the fictitious appointment of service providers to build large numbers of low cost housing.

The fraudsters allegedly use a mix of letters with provincial and national government department letterheads and stamps coupled with officials’ contact details to authenticate the appointment letters.

The KZN Department of Human Settlements has reported the matter to the South African Police Service and investigations are currently underway.

Members of the public are warned to be alert. In eThekwini Municipality, suspicious activity can be reported to the City Integrity and Investigations Unit on 0800 20 20 20 toll free. Alternatively the public can contact the KZN Department of Human Settlements Fraud Investigations and Risk Management Directorate on 031 336 5300 should these fraudulent activities come to their attention.

ENDS

Issued by eThekwini Municipality’s Communications Head, Tozi Mthethwa.
