eThekwini Municipality - CITY READY TO HOST BUMPER WEEKEND OF THRILLING FOOTBALL

2016-02-10

EThekwini Municipality is geared up and ready to host a bumper weekend of sports, as stars-in-the-making will be battling it out during the penultimate round of the MultiChoice Diski Challenge.

The festival is scheduled to take place at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday, 13 February and Sunday, 14 February 2015.

All logistics and safety plans have been put in place to ensure that the tournament will continue without any hassles. Law enforcement agencies will be out in full force to ensure that spectators are able to enjoy the game of football in a safe environment.

The festival offers an opportunity for reserve teams affiliated with the Premier Soccer League (PSL) to showcase their skills and stand a chance to be crowned the Multichoice Diski Challenge Champions. They will also win a trip to the Netherlands where they will be hosted by the Netherlands Football Association. They will get an opportunity to play against a number top teams in the Netherlands League.

Highlights to look forward to in this edition of the festival are the KZN derby, where Golden Arrows will take on Maritzburg United. This will be followed by the Soweto derby, where Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates will go head to head.

The Municipality has partnered with MultiChoice in hosting the KZN edition of the festival as part of its commitment to sports development in the City, facilitate the evolution of young players into PLS teams and encourage healthy living.

Mayor, Cllr James Nxumalo, said that hosting events of this nature was a confirmation that the City is indeed Africa’s leading Sports and Events capital. “We have successfully hosted this festival for the past two years and I have no doubt that this year will be no exception. We welcome festivals of this nature because they expose our youngsters to how sports can be used a vehicle to reach even greater heights.” Nxumalo urged all residents of the City to come out in numbers to support their favourite teams.

Entrance to the festival is free. Tickets can be collected from any Computicket or Shoprite/Checkers outlets, at no cost. Members of the public will be required to produce some form of identification when collecting tickets.
