eThekwini Municipality - CALL TO PARTICIPATE IN THE DARE TO CARE STREET SLEEPOVER

2016-05-05

EThekwini Municipality in partnership with ICARE and the Denis Hurley Centre, non-profit organisations that look after the needs of the homeless and vulnerable, invite members of the public to participate in the second annual Dare to Care Street Sleepover scheduled for Friday, 20 May 2016.

The sleepover will take place around the Durban City Hall precinct, where participants will be expected to spend the whole night to show solidarity and support for homeless citizens. The initiative is aimed at creating awareness about the plight of homeless people and strengthening relations between citizens and those without a shelter. It is also aimed at bridging the gap between the two communities and creating a better understanding of each other’s needs and circumstances.

Proceeds from the sleepover will be donated to ICARE and Dennis Hurley Centre and will be used to fund projects run by these organisations.

The sleepover offers an opportunity for members of the community to interact with and learn more about the homeless people and their daily struggles. On the night, both the homeless and ordinary citizens will have an opportunity to establish friendships, share a meal and possibly influence each other’s outlook on life.

Interested parties can sign up by visiting www.icare.co.za, emailing idare2care@icare.co.za or calling 079 017 7515. Once registered, participants will receive further information, including a sponsorship sheet. You will then get your friends and family to sponsor you R100 each to spend a night on the street. All monies collected through sponsorships will be donated to ICARE and the Denis Hurley Centre.

Participation is not open to persons under the age of 16 years, unless accompanied by a parent / guardian. Participants who are 16-18 years will need written consent from their legal guardian.
