eThekwini Municipality - COMMUNITY AND EMERGENCY SERVICES COMMITTEE ENDORSES CITY PROGRAMMES

2016-05-06

The Community and Emergency Services Committee held its monthly meeting on Thursday, 05 May 2016. Several programmes were deliberated upon and recommended for final approval by the Executive Committee (EXCO).

Metro Police Games

The committee approved that 130 members of the Metro Police Unit and support staff participate at the upcoming 12th National Metropolitan Police Games scheduled to take place in Johannesburg from 05 to 08 September 2016.

The games, hosted annually, offer an opportunity for members of Metro Police Units from across the country to interact in an informal and relaxed sporting environment. It allows them to share and learn best practice related to policing concepts in the country.

Sport codes played include soccer, volleyball, netball, golf, running, cycling, pool, darts and shooting.

In 2015, eThekwini Municipality Metro Police Unit were crowned the overall winners of the games.

Dare to Care Street Sleepover

The committee welcomed the initiative by the Safer Cities Unit to host the second Dare to Care Street Sleepover, scheduled to take place on Friday, 20 May 2016.

The Sleepover will see ordinary citizens of eThekwini give up their warm beds for one night and sleep in the streets of Durban. This is not only to show empathy for the homeless, but is also a fundraising initiative. Proceeds made from sponsorships will be donated to ICARE and Denis Hurley Centre, non-profit organisations that look after the needs of the homeless and vulnerable.

ENDS

Issued by eThekwini Municipality’s Communications Head, Tozi Mthethwa.
