eThekwini Municipality - CITY TO LAUNCH COOPERATIVE DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY

2016-06-08

EThekwini Municipality will tomorrow, Wednesday, 8 June 2016, launch its Cooperative Development Strategy. EThekwini is the first Municipality in South Africa to launch such a strategy.

The Strategy, which was adopted last year, will assist in improving and streamlining the support offered to cooperatives which includes financial assistance, business training and assistance in promoting their products.

The launch follows an extensive consultation process with cooperatives to allow them to provide input in the development of the plan as the Strategy will help shape the sector.

Commenting on the Strategy, eThekwini Mayor Cllr James Nxumalo said cooperatives have a significant role in the economic and social development of many societies around the world. He said that this form of business has also been of benefit to the City.

“As the City leadership we are proud to be the first Municipality in the country to develop and launch the Cooperative Development Strategy. This shows that our Municipality is committed to radically transforming the economy through effective development and increased participation of SMMEs and cooperatives in the mainstream economy,” said Nxumalo.

Nxumalo said launching the Cooperative Strategy was in response to the call made by President Jacob Zuma to support SMMEs and cooperatives especially in townships and rural areas.

“The City has initiated a number of programmes which will assist in creating more employment opportunities and help with poverty alleviation. Through these programmes, the Municipality has invested millions towards building capacity of the SMME sector through training and incubation projects for small business owners,” he said

Nxumalo said big and small businesses as well as government must foster a closer working relationship.

“We are currently looking at interventions with established large businesses to form partnerships with SMMEs and cooperatives within the Municipality,” added Nxumalo.
