eThekwini Municipality - ITS ALL SYSTEMS GO FOR THE ETHEKWINI SAFE SCHOOLS PROJECT- ROAD SAFETY CAMPAIGN

2016-06-20

An international road safety campaign is being piloted in eight schools in eThekwini, focusing on improving safety in and around these schools.

The eThekwini Safe Schools Project- Road Safety Campaign is a public-private partnership between eThekwini Municipality and the Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP).

The campaign, being piloted in eight primary schools within eThekwini, focuses on improving road safety in and around these schools by introducing safe road infrastructure to and from school, road safety education for pupils and a teacher training package. This training equips teachers with the relevant road safety knowledge to be shared in their schools as well as extending this information to parents and communities.

The foundation for this project was laid in 2006, when eThekwini Transport Authority officials began visiting schools throughout the City, recording accident data, providing interactive road safety demonstrations and supporting educational material as well as upgrading infrastructure by providing sidewalks and other traffic calming measures on roads near schools.

The eThekwini Safe Schools Project is based on a global road safety model that has been successfully implemented in over 15 countries, with support from the GRSP. The project is aimed at pupils in grades 1 to 7. Planning for the project began in January this year. However implementation through events and activities started in June, and will continue through to June 2017.

The project is fully funded by the Federation Internationale De L’Automobile (FIA), and will include activities identified through the evaluation of specific risk factors and extensive international research.

EThekwini Transport Authority’s Deputy Head, Logan Moodley, said he was excited about the project as it allows for a strong partnership between all stakeholders, especially pupils and teachers which will create a strong platform for continuous collaboration and action.

The collaborative efforts of the eThekwini Transport Authority, participating schools, Departments of Transport and Education, law enforcement and community representatives will see various underpinning issues such as the speed of vehicles around schools, the dangers of traffic and parked vehicles around school zones, and children not wearing safety belts being addressed as the teams embark on the project.

Ultimately the project aims to reduce road safety risk through better road safety education of communities and providing safer environments.
