2016-07-05

EThekwini Mayor James Nxumalo has expressed his sincere condolences to the Mkhwanazi family and friends during this difficult time following the sad news of the untimely passing of respected Durban businessman Don Mkhwanazi.

Mkhwanazi, was a pioneer and key proponent of Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) as well as its implementation before it became government policy by creating opportunities for black businessmen. He in fact coined the term "BEE" in the 80's as president of the Black Management Forum.

Mkhwanazi started the National Empowerment Trust in 1992. He spearheaded the return of Pepsi-Cola in South Africa in the 1990s and was Chairman of the IDC's sub-committee on BEE - an initiative which was to underscore the new strategic direction of IDC.

He also served as a non- Executive Director of Alexkor, Rodcol Contracts, Chairman of Southern African Shipyards, chairman of GIBB consulting Engineering Holdings, chairman Acetowise(Cemetery Development Company) and eThekwini TVET Council.

He was a member of President's Advisory Council on Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment until 2014. He was also non- Executive Director of Moses Kotane Institute and Agribusiness Development Agency.

Mkhwanazi, was an eThekwini Municipality's Living Legends Award recipient in 2011, in the business category. The annual event is hosted by the City to honour individuals who excel in their respective fields.

Nxumalo said Mkhwanazi played an important role in the empowerment of black entrepreneurs having worked closely with former President of South Africa Thabo Mbeki and current President Jacob Zuma.

"During the recent South Regional Business Fair in Umlazi, Don Mkhwanazi was our guest speaker and spoke about opportunities available for black entrepreneurs in the Maritime Industry. He was passionate about empowering entrepreneurs. We are saddened by his passing and extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends," said Nxumalo.
