2016-07-05

Creative thinkers from various business sectors will next week converge in Durban to share new innovative ways to sustain businesses and address socio-economic challenges.

The business people will meet at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on 7 to 8 July, for the Innovation Summit which will be hosted by eThekwini Municipality, in partnership with International Labour Organisation, Life Co Unlimited, Woodworks Emerging Leadership Corporation and Gold and Oracle.

It is in such gatherings that businesses explore non-conventional ways of finding solutions to global economic challenges that affects businesses.

Deputy Mayor, Cllr Nomvuzo Shabalala said the summit, which is an element of Innovate Durban is a key driver in business success and helps address socio-economic challenges. The City, together with its partners initiated the Innovate Durban programme to empower residents to become innovative in their communities and businesses.

“Since the inception of Innovate Durban four years ago, the programme has helped the youth find solutions to difficulties facing businesses and communities, using modern technology. This exercise has shown positive results and has helped launch the career of many entrepreneurs,” she said.

Shabalala said innovative ideas are crucial in ensuring radical economic transformation. “For the City to achieve higher levels of economic growth, job creation and to alleviate poverty, more innovation needs to be introduced in the way we conduct business. This will help increase business productivity and profitability,” added Shabalala.

Shabalala said the Innovate Durban programme will create employment opportunities, economic growth and also drive social cohesion. “This will ultimately improve the quality of life for eThekwini residents thus position Durban as a Smart City,” she said.
