eThekwini Municipality - Renowned Experts expected at The Innovation Summit

2016-07-07

The best experts in the innovation and technology space will address the business and the youth of Durban and share with them advanced technology ideas during the upcoming 3rd annual Innovation Summit.

The ideas will allow the youth to come up with innovative solutions that will improve the City’s quality of basic services, develop strategies to cope with long-term growth, create energy-efficient environments and improve infrastructure.

That is the word from Deputy Mayor and Chairperson of Economic Development and Planning Committee Nomvuzo Shabalala, who said the Municipality has heeded the innovation call and is intensifying its efforts to ensure that Durban contributes towards building smart cities for the future.

Shabalala urged the business and youth to attend this year’s summit which will be held under the theme ‘Innovate, Integrate, Motivate’ at Moses Mabhida Stadium on 7-8 July.

Recent research conducted by the Municipality revealed that innovation is one of the critical solutions that has been identified to tackle unemployment and to grow regional economies.

Shabalala said it is pivotal that the City and its residents move in a direction where a smart way of living is embraced. “That is why we have brought the best experts to address the audience during the summit,” she said.

One of the prominent speakers to address the first day of the summit is Philip Kiracofe founder of Horizen Ventures Africa which is based in New York and Cape Town. His company incubates far-reaching projects based on the foundations of innovation, technology, mobile, adventure and sustainability.

Other speakers include representatives from international and national computer technology and innovation related companies in various fields such as Oracle Corporation, Technology Innovation Agency, Immedia, Aurecon South Africa and International Business Machines Corporation.

Shabalala urged youngsters to attend these conferences. “There has been an outcry from the youth about their business ideas that are being stolen by established business. Adams and Adams, a leading law firm specialising in intellectual property, patents and commercial services will present processes to be followed towards protecting an idea,” she said.

Furthermore, on the last day of the summit creative thinkers who presented impressive ideas during the enterPRIZE challenge competition will be awarded grant funding to develop their ideas into reality. The enterPRIZE challenge is a competition where individuals are tasked to generate creative solutions to challenges facing business and their communities in eThekwini.
