eThekwini Municipality - Enhancing Women's Economic Empowerment

To further improve the economic participation of women in the local economy, eThekwini Municipality has a series of planned activities to provide women with the necessary support to build sustainable businesses.

The Municipality has implemented programmes that promote women in business, women in science and women in Information Communications Technologies. This is in order to allow for women participation in key sectors of the economy.

The Municipality also acknowledges that enhancing the participation of women in economic development is crucial in reducing the triple challenge of poverty, unemployment and inequality that is grappling South Africa.

It is with this knowledge in mind that the Municipality will on 31 August, the Municipality will host the Women Empowerment Business Breakfast at Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre. Under the theme “Enhancing Empowerment of Women”, the seminar will focus on access to the retail market and supplier development.

Prominent speakers from the retail sectors such as Boxer and Pick ’n Pay will share the platform, giving insight on business opportunities for women within the sector.

Nonku Mthembu, from the Municipality’s Business Support, Tourism and Markets Unit said the Municipality initiated socio-economic empowerment programmes which are aimed at benefitting and empowering women.

“The Municipality has budgeted over R1 million in the 2016/17 financial year towards programmes aimed at empowering women. Women will be equipped with techniques that will help them build sustainable businesses,” said Mthembu

The Municipality has also partnered with private and public sectors to improve the ability of women to access markets on competitive and equitable terms.

“The involvement of the private sector in this programme will ensure the strong existence of women in the retail sector and areas that are predominantly occupied by men,” she said

The Municipality is inviting women in business and those who are interested in gaining more insight into the retail sector to register and be part of this exciting Women Empowerment Business Breakfast.

Application forms are now available and the registration fee to participate is R150 per person. The closing date for registration is 25 August 2016.
