eThekwini Municipality-Call for emerging creative writers to be part of Essence Festival Durban

2016-10-03

Emerging writers, who have manuscripts, are invited to be part of a five day Creative Writing Workshop which will be hosted on 7 to 11 November by the City’s Parks, Recreation and Culture Unit.

The once-in-a-lifetime opportunity will offer a unique platform for up-and-coming authors to take their writing skills to the next level. The workshop is part of the Essence Festival Durban and will be offered in both Zulu and English.

Interested writers are to submit their application in the form of a one page motivation, explaining why they are suitable for participation. Applicants should specify whether they wish to participate in the Zulu or English category.

Selected participants will have an opportunity to be part of the Essence Festival Durban and experience the ARTiculate Africa Programme, where they will meet up with leading book industry players and gain vital insights regarding how they can get their work published.

Nakanjani Sibiya and Shubnum Khan will be the main facilitators. Sibiya is the author and editor of a number of Zulu books across various genres. He has published five volumes of short stories, four dramas and is the editor and co-author of seven anthologies of short stories.

Khan is a South African writer and university lecturer. She has a Media Studies degree summa cum laude and a Master’s degree in English, cum laude. Her first novel, Onion Tears has been translated into Italian.

There will also be presentations from other key industry players.
