eThekwini Municipality - City to Support Small and Micro Businesses

2016-11-18

To affirm its commitment to support the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) sector, eThekwini Municipality will host an Economic Development and Growth Seminar in eThekwini (EDGE) session on micro finance on Tuesday, 22 November 2016 at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

SMEs are vital drivers of economic growth, with this sector recognised globally for its role in creating employment opportunities and helping to alleviate poverty.

Renowned international speaker and Economics Professor at Juraj Dobrila University in Croatia, Dr Milford Bateman, will be addressing attendees on strategies that assist sustainable approaches to micro funding for SMEs. He will share his international expertise on workable procedures to support and fund small and micro businesses.

EThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede said government recognises the role of SMEs in growing the economy of the City.

“Even as we pledge our support to further grow this sector we acknowledge that there are challenges faced in this sector which inhibit its growth and sustainability,” said Gumede.

She said the seminar will enable the City and other stakeholders to review the current status on micro finance and financial support given to micro businesses.

“This will then allow us as the City leadership, with relevant stakeholders, to engage in innovative approaches that will provide more sustainable financial solutions for Small, Micro and Medium Enterprises (SMME),” she said.

Gumede added that the advancement of the SMME sector remains a priority in the City and that further platforms would be created to empower entrepreneurs to compete in global markets.

Members of the media are cordially invited to attend the seminar scheduled as follows:
