eThekwini Municipality - City Geared up for First Long Weekend of the 2016 Festive Season

2016-12-15

The festive season is now in full swing and visitors from all around the world are flocking to eThekwini to enjoy a festive and joyous holiday season.

As we approach the first long weekend of the 2016/17 festive season, the Festive Season Management Committee (FESMAC) is confident that all systems put in place will ensure that the thousands of patrons who will visit our beaches and various attraction sites will have an enjoyable and hassle-free time.

With the forecast of warm sunny weather during the long weekend, we anticipate that our beaches will be packed to capacity, as both locals and visitors want to come and enjoy time with family and friends, have a braai and take a dip in the water.

To minimise traffic congestion around the beaches, road closures will be effected and only motorists with beach permits will be allowed access to areas beyond the boom gates. Residents who reside within the beach precinct can collect permits at the Metro Police Office at Boscombe Place. Proof of residence is required when collecting permits.

STATISTICS FROM THE WEEK

Since the beginning of the week, an estimated 122 313 patrons have been recorded at various beaches around the City. Approximately 2 150 armbands have been issued, 49 rescues have been carried and 196 people received first aid treatment for various blue bottle stings and minor cuts.

Beach and City maintenance is on track with staff members working daily to ensure that beaches and surrounding areas are litter free. About 124 518.91 tons of litter was collected. The Durban Solid Waste clean-up team works in three shifts which are scheduled as follows: 06h00 â€" 14h30, 15h00 â€" 23h00 and 22h00 â€" 05h30. There is a staff complement of approximately 130 people.

No drownings have been reported.
