eThekwini Hosts Bumper Festive Season

2017-01-16

Durban was abuzz with activity and fun this festive season, as more than 2.5 million locals, national and international visitors enjoyed sunny days at the beaches, shopped and visited various scenic sites to wind down 2016 and usher in 2017.

With the favourable weather conditions, beaches were packed to capacity. On the long-weekend of the 16th of December close to 500 000 visitors were recorded at the various beaches. The New Year weekend peaked at close to 800 000 patrons recorded at the beaches. Approximately 174 333 child-identification wristbands were issued and these assisted in timeously reuniting separated children with their parents/guardians.

Rescues made during the festive season at the beach totalled 698 and 18 674 people received first aid treatment.

Over and above the deployment of South African Police and Metro Police Officers, an additional 65 lifeguards, 83 security guards, 47 pool guides, 60 beach buddies, 190 cleaning staff, and 28 child-minders ensured that people were able to enjoy themselves in a safe and conducive manner.

There were also events galore, which kept all age groups entertained. Among an array of events lined up were; FACT Durban Rocks at People’s Park, The Grand Finale at GrowthPoint Kings Park Stadium, 8th Annual Gospel All Stars at Centrum Site, 1st Annual KwaMakhutha New Year's Eve Music Festival at Umkhumbi Sports Ground, New Year’s Day Extravaganza at Umnini Dam and Woz’eDurban at Botanic Gardens. The major events attracted a crowd of between 7000 to 8000 party goers who danced through the day and night.

Hotel occupancy maintained an average of 95 percent throughout the festive season.
