eThekwini Municipality - GOVERNANCE AND HUMAN RESOURCES COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATIONS

2018-02-09

The eThekwini Municipality’s Governance and Human Resources Committee, chaired by, Cllr Barbara Fortein, held its first monthly meeting for 2018, yesterday 7 February at City Hall. The following items were supported and recommended to the Executive Committee for approval includes but not limited to;

VOTER REGISTRATION WEEKEND

The Committee has approved the Voter Registration Campaign to register voters for the 2019 General Elections and to confirm their address details on the voters roll during the weekend of 10 and 11 March.

The initiative forms part of the ongoing campaign by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to obtain the addresses for all voters as well as ensuring voters are registered in correct voting district segments in line with the ruling of the Constitutional Court in June 2016.

IEC has reported that eThekwini was one of the voting regions with high number of voters without addresses.

Cllr Barbara Fortein said the Municipal Sizakala Centres and other facilities will be used for voter registration. She calls on residents to register and to confirm their addresses. “We urge all voters to register and check their details so they are not deprived of their constitutional rights,” said Fortein.

Verification of addresses for voters whose names are without physical addresses will run until the end of June 2018.

Residents needing to either register or update their addresses can also visit the IEC offices or do it online at www.elections.org or through the IEC contact centre 0800 11 8000 between Monday and Friday, during office hours.

ESTABLISHMENT OF CUSTOMER SERVICE PAGE ON SOCIAL MEDIA

The Governance and Human Resources Committee supported the submission to establish the social media page to handle customer services enquiries.

Currently, the Municipality handles customer queries though call centers and Sizakala Customer Centers. With this new platform, residents will now have an option to lodge their complaints through social media.

The Head of Communications Unit, Tozi Mthethwa, said there has been a noticeable trend whereby customers use social media to raise complaints with the Municipality. Thus, it has become important to explore an alternative way of facilitating service complaints on social media.

The new platform will be launched on 23 February 2018.

WELCOME BOARDS AT KING SHAKA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

The Committee also supported the installation of welcome boards at the King International Airport as part of welcoming visitors to Durban.

King Shaka International Airport is the third busiest airports in South Africa, behind OR Tambo International Airport and Cape Town International Airport. In 2016-17, it recorded 4.8 million passengers with the majority of 4.18 million being domestic passengers and 277 866 being international and a small percentage of traffic being classified as “unscheduled.”

The Head of Communications, Tozi Mthethwa said the branding at the airport will allow visitors to know what eThekwini offers. This will also encourage visitors to visit attractions that the City and KwaZulu-Natal Province offers.

“The welcome boards will entice visitors to ask questions and learn about the City and Province while increasing the tourism,” said Mthethwa.

Issued by the eThekwini Municipality’s Head of Communications Tozi Mthethwa.
