eThekwini Municipality - City Embarks On Formal Trading By-Law Roadshows

2018-02-20

To effectively regulate street trading in the City and empower informal traders, eThekwini Municipality is embarking on Informal Trading By-law road shows in all eThekwini regions.

These public engagements are a platform for traders and affected sectors to comment and make recommendations on the proposed amended By-law.

The Acting Head of Business Support, Tourism and Markets Unit, Thulani Nzama said the By-law is necessary to improve the way of doing business within the informal economy sector.

The engagement with informal traders in this process seeks to address issues of non-compliance and law enforcement and also to give clarity on the issues in the By-law. “Some of the key aspects highlighted in the By-law include prohibiting trading in places where informal trading is restricted, confiscation of goods, regulation of abandoned goods and plans to crack down on people trading without permits,” said Nzama.

He said the Municipality will consider all the inputs made by traders and relevant stakeholders. “Once the inputs and comments from the traders and relevant stakeholders have been made, the draft will then be presented to the Council for adoption. Thereafter it gets gazetted and promulgated,” he added.

The Chairperson of the Economic Development and Planning Committee, Cllr Sipho Kaunda said informal trade plays a significant role in the city’s economy and create more employment opportunities.

“This entire process intends to allow traders to establish themselves in order to fully participate in transforming and growing the economy of the city,” he said.

Informal Traders road shows will be held at 09h00 as follows:

• Verulam Market on 21 February

• Isipingo SMME Market, Inwabi Rd on 21 February

• UMkhumbane Community Hall on 22 February

• Clermont Hall on 27 February
