The African Renaissance Concert 2017


The African Renaissance Concert will be take place on Saturday 27 May at the Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre in Durban at 6.30 pm. The artists performing are AKA, Nasty C and Naima Kay.
Both Nasty C and AKA have been nominated for awards at the 23rd South African Music Awards (SAMA), which will be held on the 26 May at Sun City. The announcement of the winners of the different categories this annual music industry event is much anticipated.
Rap star Nasty C has an impressive five nominations. His Bad Hair Extensions album earned him nods for Best Newcomer of the Year, Best Male Artist of the Year, Best Album of the Year and Best Rap Album.
AKA says, "I look forward to performing at the African Renaissance next week, as everybody knows, I am pro-African, having collaborated with some many African artists as well as toured Africa. I love this beautiful continent of ours. But I am also blessed to perform in Durban, which is one of my favourite places to perform in the world". Reason featuring AKA and Khuli Chana (Yipikayay), has been nominated in the best Music Video of the Year and One Time has been nominated for Record of the Year.
Naima Kay has previously won SAMA Newcomer of the year award. She has serenaded the crowds at the biggest festivals in South African namely Cape Town Jazz Festival, Macufe, Ugu Jazz Festival, Matatiele Jazz Festival, Durban Jazz Festival; she also performed in the Golden Hour at the Durban Jazz Festival accompanied by an orchestra.
Naima Kay says, “I'm truly honoured to have been chosen and given this platform to perform at the African Renaissance Concert, this tells me that my music has definitely grown and developed.”
DJ Phat Joe is well known to East Coast Radio’s listeners and he will be the host for the concert. He says, "Developing a better Africa and a better world has been the core mantra of my professional life. Ever since I came back to Africa 25 years ago, at the age of 17, I pledged my life to serve and contribute passionately to Africa and its Renaissance. The road is not easy, but it has been enjoyable and given me purpose and meaning beyond anything else I could imagine. Events like the African Renaissance Festival are important in that they remind us of the difficult road behind us and the exciting road ahead. I am excited to celebrate KZN’s Renaissance with my fellow Africans at the African Renaissance Concert.”
