The African Scholarship Scheme (ASS) is offered by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), the cultural arm of the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, to South African nationals. Each year, ICCR offer 52 slots to South Africa for pursuing undergraduate, postgraduate, PhD and post - doctoral studies.

ASS offers degree / diploma / certificate courses in the field of arts, fine arts, IT, commerce and science. For students wishing to study engineering courses, it is mandatory that physics, chemistry and mathematics are included in their school leaving examinations with 60% marks. Scholarships for medical studies such as MBBS, BDS or for medical research leading to Ph.D. degrees are not offered under Africa Scholarship Scheme.

The scholarships offers return international airfare from South Africa to India along with stipends for living and house rent allowance. The university course fees and medical insurance are paid by ICCR directly to the concerned university.

The academic session in India starts in June/July. The applicant must be proficient in English and have a valid passport for the duration of course before submitting the application.

Indian Technical and Economic

Cooperation Programme The Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) Programme was instituted on September 1964 as a bilateral programme of assistance of the Government of India.

Training or capacity building is one of the major activities under ITEC. The professionals and people from developing countries are offered unique training courses, both civilian and defense, in different centres of excellence in India which empower them with not just professional skills, but prepare them for an increasingly globalised world.

There are 56 institutions conducting 318 courses of various lengths during the year. The training programme is demand driven and subjects selected are of interest to developing countries for their working professionals wide range of disciplines.

The courses are for applicants 25-45 years of age who are working in government, private and public sector, parastatals, universities, chambers of commerce and industry.

The level of these courses range from introductory to advanced level. Courses are offered in seven broad categories namely:

• Accounts, Audit, Banking and Finance Courses
• IT, Telecommunication and English Courses
• Management Courses
• SME/Rural Development Courses
• Specialised Courses
• Technical Courses
• Environmental and Renewable

Energy Courses

Every year around 5000 slots are allocated to ITEC partner countries to attend the various civilian training courses in India. An encouraging trend of senior level participants from within and outside Government
joining ITEC courses have been noticed â€" a clear affirmation that ITEC courses have come to be recognised as useful tools for capacity building, empowerment and upgrading of skills.

The Consulate of India in Durban is proud to state that 45 participants from our jurisdiction have attended the ITEC Programme and returned with confidence in their newly attained knowledge and skills.

Approximately 15 ITEC applications are received by CGI, Durban on a yearly basis which are sent to High Commission, Pretoria for processing.
