The company was established in 1962 is one of the largest structural steel, platemaking and mechanical engineering companies in KwaZulu-Natal. In 2005 the company was acquired by Elma Engineering Service (Pty) Ltd ("Elma") a newly formed black owned and black managed company.
Elma is involved in steel fabrication and is geared to handle light and heavy engineering work. The company has a well equipped machine shop that under takes all machine work to support the fabrication workshop. The workshop in Glen Anil covers an area of 4500m² (under roof) and is equipped to handle medium to heavy fabrication in both mild and stainless steel.
Elma is widely acknowledged as one of the leading manufacturers of quality sugar milling, paper and chemical equipment and machinery.
Elma has successfully completed various projects in countries as far afield as Egypt, Zambia and Mozambique.
Ownership Siyabonga Meyiwa founder of the company is the managing director. Siyabonga is a University of London (King's College) graduate and is a qualified Mechanical Engineer. Siyabonga has worked for various companies including Umgeni Water Board where he served as a Board member. Siyabonga controls 60% of the shareholding of the company.
In 2008, Mazinga Capital (Pty) Ltd ("Mazinga") acquired a 40% (forty percent) shareholding in Elma Engineering Services. Mazinga is a wholly black-owned company that was founded by Mduduzi Bophela.
Services Services extend to design detailing (mechanical and electrical), estimation, procurement, manufacturing, corrosion protection and installation.
Fabrication Structural Steel & Plate Work (Medium & Heavy) Structural steel work for various equipment support, building services and other structures such as tanks, air receivers, heat exchangers, vacuum pans, diffusers, etc.
Machining & Mechanical High precision spare parts and components based on the drawings or samples e.g. shafts, screw conveyors, etc.
Maintenance & Site Installation Elma is cementing itself as a highly professional company providing solutions to clients through offering superior service to that of its competitors. Installation and maintenance services are provided for various types of equipment. Elma is involved in the overhaul of major components to advise clients on improved equipment availability.
Maintenance as a service can be provided as part of a short or long term contract.
Electrical & Instrumentation Cable racking and routing, instrument calibration, variable speed drive applications for pumps, motors, etc. Elma also assists in PLC programming and trouble shooting existing systems.
Quality Systems Elma is committed to quality systems; this includes material certification, radio-graphic and ultrasonic testing by government approved inspection authorities. Apart from in-house quality systems, the company is also versatile enough to work to other company's quality systems as required with some projects.
Staff Training Elma is a MERSETA registered training provider and currently employs 21 trainees. Elma also provides bursaries to staff members that qualify. The company is committed to developing its employees and spends significant amounts of money towards staff development.
The company is AA rated by Empowerdex and is a Level Three Contributor.
Supporting Enterprise Development Elma strongly believes in enterprise development and has supported a few of its employees who have ventured into their own businesses in the engineering field. Elma outsources to some of these businesses in an effort to help develop sustainable employee owned businesses and SMMEs. Elma also provides financial and non-financial support to other micro-enterprises in related fields of business.
Social Responsibility Elma recruits students from the Coastal KZNFET College based in Umlazi Township and from various other Technical Colleges, including eThekwini TechnicalCollege and MajubaTechnicalCollege, for training based on the company's training needs analysis. The students are put through various formal and informal training programmes and are provided with the opportunity to gain on-the-job training as trainee boilermakers, fitters and turners, and electricians.
The students are paid a living allowance on a monthly basis to cover basic living and travelling expenses. Elma also makes ad hoc donations to various organisations and needy students in the field of engineering around the Durban municipality.
The Future Elma Engineering Services is part of the consortium that is building the KingShakaAirport and the surrounding business area that will include a dry port. The project completion date is estimated to be 2014.
The R45 billion project for demothballing of three Eskom power stations promises good prospects for companies such as Elma Engineering Services. The growth of the bio-fuels industry provides good prospects for Elma who currently manufactures equipment for the sugar industry, which uses similar or the same equipment as the company is currently manufacturing.
The increase in investments activity in Zimbabwe's sugar milling and the bio-fuels sectors also offers great prospects for Elma who has already received various enquiries from upcoming projects in Zimbabwe. Elma has been awarded a large contract in a sugar mill based in Malawi, which is in line with Elma's plan to grow its exports into the continent.
