PET Recycling
World demand for PET resin is expected to continue to grow by 7% per annum. The reason for this growth is because PET offers substantial benefits for packaging. It is cost effective, environmentally friendly and easily recycled.
Hosaf recognises the need for the recycling of polyester bot-tles and has played an active role in an industry- promoted initiative. The company has a recycling venture based in Johannesburg (main consumer area) to recollect used bottles. These are recycled and currently used for fibre manufacture.
This initiative provides work for the unemployed as well as contributes to preserving the environment.
Quality
Quality is the foundation on which Hosaf researches, develops, tests and manufactures its products. In this technology-inspired world, the Company has access to international expertise through thoughtfully selected global partners; ensuring that its products are as good as the best anywhere. Quality also underpins the cleanliness and safety of the plants in the major South African centres, their surrounding communities and the country. Hosaf has accreditations from some of the biggest and most respected brand names in the world and is also ISO 9001:2000 certified.
Employee Well Being
Hosaf has an established clinic offering AIDS education,AIDS awareness and AIDS testing programmes, as well as full eye testing. Monthly health education and small group discussions are in place and working well.
Community Projects and Corporate Social Investment
Hosaf ’s Durban operation supports a community bordering the factory site by establishing a communication forum with the local community in the form of a Good Neighbourly Committee (GNC). Regular meetings are held and the community receives updates on the environmental performance of the company. A joint job creation venture between Hosaf and a local security company has resulted in unemployed residents of the neighbourhood being trained as security officers. Hosaf provides the training, and the security firm provided the employment. An extended programme will commence in the third quarter 2007. As part of our social upliftment and job creation programme the local Hime Street residents are employed on an ad-hoc basis to recycle polymer production waste etc.
The children’s park that is located on the site border has been adopted on an “ADOPT A SPOT” basis and has been incorporated into the site maintenance programme and contributes to the children’s safety at play. The Umbilo Secondary School bordering the site also forms part of the GNC. Assistance to the school is provided mainly in the form of maintenance and bursaries. A number of classroom desks were refurbished by the Hosaf property maintenance department. Security gates were manufactured onsite and are to be installed in the schools’ new block.
Bursaries are also made available to students who study toward a Degree in Engineering, while utilizing company resources to effectively complete all university projects and assignments and also gain valuable experience during university breaks. An ex-Umbilo School student fromthe neighbouring community is a final year student at the Durban University of Technology and recently completed her in-service training, under the guidance of the Hosaf Management team, towards obtaining her National Diploma in Operations Management.
As sand in an oyster is refined to create something of quality, the dedication of Hosaf people creates products that make a real meaningful, and valuable impact on everyday life.
