Building Our Province
NPC-CIMPOR's profile as KwaZulu-Natals premier cement manufacturing company is unquestionable.
Situated within the heart of the building and construction boom that has overtaken KZN over the past six years, the company became the first cement manufacturing operation in South Africa to launch an expansion drive in order to cater for the rapid upswing in demand for cement. In the process this expansion at their Simuma factory on the Lower South Coast has resulted in the construction of the first new cement kiln to be built in the country over the past 25 years.
This expansion has been matched by NPC-CIMPOR's rapid diversification into the concrete and aggregate market, in line with their owners (CIMPOR-Cimentos de Portugal) commitment to providing an overall and integrated service to their customers worldwide.
Such growth has been closely accompanied by a willing acceptance of its growing responsibility to the broader community and environment in which the company operates, making it a worthy top business. In short, the company has become a highly significant contributor to the overall economy of KwaZulu-Natal.
Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment
NPC-CIMPOR's shareholder and management (Cimentos de Portugal SGPS S.A (CIMPOR) the 10th largest multinational cement group in the world recognises that Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment is a business imperative in SouthAfrica. In this context CIMPOR sold 26% of NPC-CIMPOR to a black- owned consortium towards the end of 2006.
One of the core considerations behind this transaction was the establishment of an Education and Entrepreneurial Trust to benefit those communities that live nearby the company's three cement manufacturing industries. The transaction itself will be largely vendor financed through the establishment of the NPC Staff Trust and its BEE partners Siyakha Cement Holdings (Pty LTD).The Staff Trust has created ownership opportunities in the company for employees.
Meeting Demand
With the support received from the company's international owners, management has invested in excess of Euro 100 million into expanding its operation at the Simuma factory. With the company's cement production capacity now figuring at 1.5 million tons per annum, this expansion programme promises to overcome any future cement shortages.
Diversification
One of NPC-CIMPOR's more notable developments has been the rapid expansion of its concrete and aggregate division which has seen its footprint expand from its first purchase in 2004 of the Uvongo-based concrete, sand and aggregates company South Coast Stone Crushers and Concrete Mix.Additional purchases include a ready-mixed operation in Park Rynie, the Sterkspruit quarry and ready-mixed operation in Shongweni, a ready-mixed, wet plant operation in Tinley Manor as well as a similar business in Cato Ridge.
Further testimony of the growth and influence of NPC-CIMPOR's concrete and aggregate division was the recent announcement of their being awarded the tender for the supply of the concrete for the new King ShakaAirport now being constructed at La Mercy.
Company Accreditation
NPC-CIMPOR has maintained an exemplary safety, health and environment (SHE) performance, which is clearly depicted by the company's outstanding awards registered with NOSA (National Occupational Safety Association), ASPASA (Aggregates and Stone Producers Association of South Africa) and SARMA (South African Ready-Mix Association).
Alternative Fuels
NPC-CIMPOR is continuing its efforts to find alternative fuels to burn clinker in their kiln at Simuma. This has been viewed as one of the more environmentally progressive projects within the industrial sector of South Africa, whereby the company aims to save on the use of non-renewable resources such as coal.
Skills Development
Since 2002, NPC-CIMPOR has grown its assistance to emerging blockyards by some 100% (from 100 to 200 businesses) whereby the company both identified and nurtured these businesses into viable and sustainable enterprises.Within this support more than 700 people have received technical training in the form of practical block-making skills (70% women, 20% youth).
Social Responsibility
Education is one of the cornerstones of NPC-CIMPOR's corporate social investment (CSI) policy.More than half of this budget is directed towards education and training initiatives which include providing educational infrastructure to disadvantaged schools surrounding the company's three factories in the Lower South Coast, Durban and Newcastle.
One of the major recipients of the company's support over the past 12 years is the Project Build organisation. Project Build is a non-profit organisation and to date NPC-CIMPOR has had its assistance valued at nearly R3-million and the placement of more than 2 000 schoolchildren in schools.
The highly praised Foundations of Learning initiative began in 2007.With the support of the Dept. of Minerals and Energy (DME), NPC-CIMPOR identified the top eight Maths and Science female learners from five disadvantaged schools surrounding their three factories and along with an educator from each school, invited them to a week-long advanced learning programme in Durban.
Tourism
The company has committed itself to the development of tourism and ecotourism development on the KZN South Coast where along with Idwala Carbonates, it contributed more than R500 000 in building a notable tourism outlet in its own conservancy opposite its Simuma factory. While serving as the official tourism bureau for the Greater Oribi Gorge area, it also fulfils the purpose of offering a venue for resident communities to exhibit and sell their crafts.
Environmental Education
Another of the company's core priorities is conservation and sustainable environ- mental practices. NPC-CIMPOR has made a substantial financial donation to the South African Marine Biological Research (SAAMBR), based at uShaka Marine World. This sponsorship has endured for 3 years and was recently renewed for a further 3 years. In return the organisation granted the company naming rights for the facility; now called the NPC Sea World Education Centre. The company has also undertaken an outreach programme that has brought thousands of schoolchildren from disadvantaged schools in the vicinity of the company's factories to the NPC Sea World Education Centre as well as the uShaka Marine World Aquarium. Another notable contribution has been the outstanding success of the company's management at its Simuma factory. The Simuma Conservancy is an excellent example of an untouched and closely monitored 250-hectare piece of land earmarked for birding, game viewing, hiking and educational visits. Management has been highly praised by KZN Ezemvelo Wildlife and Birdlife Africa for the manner in which large swathes of the reserve have been cleared of alien plants as well as for the thousands of disadvantaged schoolchildren that have visited the reserve.
NPC-CIMPOR is also a corporate member of WESSA and the KZNWildlands Trust.
