Today at 55 years old and with more than 7,5 million listeners Ukhozi FM still delivers content with poise and deftness, affirming the cultural identity of its listeners.
Ukhozi FM delivers inspiring, relevant and interesting music and programming that appeals to various audiences around the country, particularly the youth between the ages of 16 and 35. Even though content is delivered in isiZulu Ukhozi FM prides itself as a radio station that does not only target and caters for a Zulu-speaking audience but also those who have some level of understanding of IsiZulu. This public broadcaster, number one radio station in Africa offers a wide range of music genres ranging from Gospel music, House/Kwaito, Hip - Hop, RNB, Afro-pop, Jazz and Maskandi Traditional music just to name a few. All these different music genres are made up of only 30% international songs and 70% of our local hits. The mandate lies strongly on empowering local artists, living up to a goal of the SABC which is to empower local content.
Ukhozi FM also does a number of outside broadcasts in different parts of the country which allows the station to interact with the listeners and get to immerse itself in their fascinating stories and various geographical spheres. Innovations in the area of community relations include forming partnerships with community groups such as NGOs and government departments during events or campaigns such as the Back-To-My-School Campaign, Ukhozi Cares Music Festival, African Renaissance Conference and various Future Leaders initiatives just to mention a few. Amongst the many things that makes Ukhozi FM a cut above the rest and a strong force to reckon with is its amazingly unique and talented presenters who have an unwavering tenacity to continue furnishing their craft and keep Ukhozi FM as a brand close to their hearts. One of these presenters is none other than the amazingly quirky Sipho Mbatha who is known to many as DJ Sgqemeza and who has swiftly grown from strength to strength, mastering his own craft and continuing to be a force to reckon with.
He appeals to many young people in South Africa and hosts the 'Vuka Mzansi' breakfast show every weekday from 06:30am till 09:00pm with the ever so glamorous Zama Ngcobo, who is no stranger to radio having previously done both TV and radio presenting.
Vuka Mzansi
Vuka Mzansi drives inspiration, information and insight first and is one of the listeners most favourite shows on Ukhozi FM. Focus on motivation, job creation, entrepreneurship empowerment, comedy and good music sets this show apart from other breakfast shows. Though pacey, all content delivery is done effectively and efficiently. It has appeal for people from all walks of life, ranging from scholars, parents, business people and community leaders.
'Lady D' Khoza
Jabul'ujule is one other striking show on this biggest station in Africa that has over the years managed to produce very interesting, attention-grabbing content that has afforded the station thousands of loyal listeners. The show is presented by the vibey, hilarious, very spontaneous and most importantly the original Dudu 'Lady D' Khoza who has more than 20 years experience in the radio industry. It airs every weekday from 9:00 am till 12:00 pm and can be viewed as a combination of a magazine programme and a talk show, which also includes a well planned entertainment approach. The show targets women from the age of 25 and beyond. Rural development, women empowerment, crime awareness, health and lifestyle issues are what characterize Jabul'ujule.
Nethezeka NoKhozi
One other very popular show on Ukhozi FM that continues to make waves is 'Nethezeka NoKhozi.' The main focus of the show is to empower the listeners by providing information on skills development in many disciplines and employment opportunities through discussions in line with the theme of the month, such as issues with men, finance, the economy, children or HIV/AIDS education.
The show is presented by Nonhlanhla Buthelezi, known to many as 'Mroza Rhee', alongside Vukani 'Chilli M' Masinga. Mroza is also a vibey person who uses a special lingo with listeners that keeps listeners glued to their radios, while Chilli M on the other hand is a seasoned radio presenter that has mesmerised South African audiences for the past 13 years. This is also a man who has both radio and TV experience. Nethezeka NoKhozi which is also widely known as the 'Flight 12-3' flies every Monday to Friday from 12:00 to 15:00 pm.
