Corobrik face brick creates homely Centurion retirement village

2017-03-28

A comfortable place for retired citizens to call home was developed by Central Developments using Corobrik’s sustainable and appealing face brick range.  A total of 3.3 million Nebraska Travertine and 1.7 million Classic Satin face bricks went into the building of Eldoraigne Retirement Village, situated in Centurion, Pretoria.

“The developer opted to use our durable range throughout the 9-hectare site, resulting in a striking retirement village for the citizens residing here,” said Musa Shangase, Corobrik’s Commercial Director. “Retired people cannot spend money unnecessarily which is why clay face brick is the perfect solution. The brick requires no upkeep in the form of paint or plaster at a later stage and clay’s inherent thermal qualities severely decreases the occupant’s need for artificial heating and cooling systems. Homes are kept warm in the winter months and cooler in summer.”

Consisting of 125 apartments in three apartment blocks and a further 288 houses, Eldoraigne Retirement Estate was developed by the Central Developments Property Group and their professional team consisting of Central Development Projects, Albert Monteith Architects, Eksteen Le Roux Electrical Engineers and Civil Craft Engineers alongside several sub-contractors.

“Eldoraigne Retirement Estate offers a variety of housing units which caters for the needs of all retirees,” explained Riaan Joubert, Marketing Manager of Central Developments. “The units are designed and developed in such a way that retirees will be able to maintain the active, independent lifestyle they are accustomed to. Every unit is conveniently close to the service and frail care centre and all units are north facing for optimum temperature comfort. Aluminium window frames which seal tightly further ensure proper insulation and all houses are fitted with solar water geysers to minimise heating costs.”

Residents at Eldoraigne Retirement Estate have access to vital 24-hour frail care as well as a dining room, communal hall and lounge, onsite doctors and physiotherapists, a convenience shop as well as a hair and beauty salon.

The houses range from two to three bedrooms with varying floor plans, patios, private gardens and service courtyards. The one or two-bedroom apartments are a more affordable option located conveniently near all support services. They are designed with sunny and spacious rooms, a patio or balcony and single carport. Elevators are conveniently placed throughout the building to ensure easy access to the apartments and communal facilities and have a back-up generator in the event of power failures.

Commenting on the choice of Corobrik’s face brick range, Central Developments’ appointed architect, Albert Monteith, said they offered triple benefits for developers and residents.

“Firstly, there are the aesthetics,” said Monteith. “The colours selected were earthy, very close to stone and clay. The combination of dark and light adds to the artistic atmosphere of calm created at the retirement village. Secondly, the practical aspect, in that face brick never needs to be painted which cuts the cost for body corporates and home owners. Thirdly, as was just touched on, the cost factor. It is an extremely cost effective product, the development is brought to the buyer at market value with maximum growth on investment over time and was sold out during the construction period.”
