Corobrik's face brick donation will add to new school science block

2018-12-11

Corobrik’s donation of 10 000 Montana Travertine face bricks will contribute towards the construction of a much-needed science block at St Andrew’s School for Girls in Johannesburg, furthering their vision of developing more female role models in the field of science.

“As an organisation, Corobrik has a long history of supporting developments which provide South African schoolchildren with quality educational facilities,” said Musa Shangase, Corobrik’s Commercial Director. “Our durable, versatile and aesthetically valuable face brick range has been used to construct schools and additional school buildings across South Africa. We are so happy to be contributing towards this worthwhile facility at St Andrew’s School for Girls which will serve as a place for scientific education for many years to come.”

The Montana Travertine face bricks donated will go towards the creation of the two-storey science block, set for completion in 2020. It will include seven laboratories â€" three life science laboratories, three physical science laboratories and one junior school natural sciences laboratory. There will also be a physical education department work room, toilet facilities (including those for disabled users), rooftop gardens and other environmentally-considered initiatives.

The design will incorporate open spaces that accommodate flexible, modern teaching styles using very limited fixed furniture in classrooms. The rooftop gardens will allow teaching to extend to the outside environment. As it will be constructed adjacent to the school’s heritage building, Bedford Court, the design will not compete with the older style but rather take on a more modern look, with the brickwork matching the newer buildings around the school.

Commenting on the Corobrik donation, Gill Jeffrey the Head of the Senior School at St Andrew’s School for Girls said: “We are very excited about the building of this block as we have had many successful alumni enter the medical, engineering and environmental areas of study and want this tradition to continue. We believe in the promotion of the development of young women in predominantly male-orientated fields of study, such as science. This will be a fantastic opportunity for further growth of our sciences department, and our girls!”

Business Manager at St Andrew’s School for Girls, Helenor Whitecross, added that it was a fitting coincidence that both St Andrew’s School for Girls and Corobrik - both renowned South African establishments â€" were founded in 1902.
