Ithala Brings Pride And Happiness To Needy Rural Learners With New School Uniforms

2018-05-31

Ithala’s Corporate Social Investment Unit recently brought smiles of happiness to 540 learners at various rural schools in KwaZulu-Natal when they provided them with full school uniform.

The Abantwana Bethu or “Our Children” campaign aims to promote a positive learning environment for learners in remote regions of the province, either through financial support or the sponsorship of essential school supplies.

“This year we decided to provide uniforms- the full kit from tunics and trousers to shirts, socks shoes and jersey’s â€" to learners in schools in Nkandla, Hlatikhulu, Manguzi, Bulwer and Msinga,” said Sitandiwe Dimba, Ithala’s Group Reputation Management Manager.

“As Ithala was one of the first and biggest organisations to support business and individuals in rural Kwazulu-Natal we care for the wellbeing of the community and especially the children. The future of the country is in the hands of our children and grandchildren. Therefore, our first priority should be the nurturing and education.

“Research has shown that school uniforms form an important part of education. It not only identifies a pupil as being from a school and provides a sense of identity it teaches children to dress smartly and to be proud of their appearance. This is important for when youth enter the workplace.

“If you don’t have a uniform, or it does not fit properly, or it is worn out, it can set children apart and make them feel inadequate. It has been shown in other countries that by providing uniforms to underprivileged learners it reduces absenteeism substantially,” said Dimba.

The schools with learners in need were identified by Ithala SOC Limited’s branch managers in Ithala’s network of branches working in partnership with Ithala’s CSI unit.

The total investment of this initiative amounted to.

An important part of the Abantwana Bethu initiative is the strategic partnerships that Ithala has developed with various rural communities.

“We have engaged with the Amakhosi and Traditional Council in the various areas and the uniforms for the Zamukwazi Primary School in Hlatikulu were handed over to the AbaMbo Traditional Council leaders. This speaks directly to Ithala’s recognition of the role that the Amakhosi and Traditional leadership play in communities,” said Dimba.

“Many companies have approached us with beautiful promises, but only Ithala has delivered on their promise and kept to their mandate for development. This shows that Ithala is an organisation that cares about its people and the welfare of the future generations,” said Inkosi Sibonelo Mkhize at a ceremony in which the uniforms were handed over to the AbaMbo Traditional Council.
