Wednesday, 15 May, 2013 - 08A community outreach programme by students from the Durban University of Technology gave an Umkomaas based pre-school a much needed facelift. The students who reside at the Seaboard residence, South Beach, Durban, visited Amahlongwa Pre-school in Umkomaas on Saturday (May 12, 2013) where they revamped two classrooms, donated toys to pupils and created a vegetable garden. The revamp involved painting the pre-school’s run down walls and floor. The money used to buy the paint and other goods donated to the pre-school came from money donated by generous students from the University (DUT). The visit was part of community outreach initiate organised by the Seaboard House Committee to show responsibility towards the community. During the visit, the pupils and their parents were also treated to lunch. The pre-school caters for 85 children, ranging between 0 to 6 years.
Speaking about the initiative, Seaboard Residence Advisor Zwelihle Nzuza said it was important that students create a caring university that supports needy communities situated close to it. |
