SAPREF - Refinery marks 50th year with mobile library donations

2011-12-11

WENTWORTH Primary School was one of 50 schools to receive a mobile library from Sapref in honour of the refinery’s 50th anniversary.

The schools, selected in partnership with the KZN Department of Education, span all of KZN, with 20% from the South Durban Basin (SDB), as the SDB is the priority of the refinery.

Like all the other selected schools, Wentworth Primary did not previously have proper library. The staff and pupils of Wentworth Primary were elated to receive the donation, which includes 800 books, a flat screen TV, a DVD player and 30 educational DVDs.

“The donation of this mobile library brings learning to our doorstep and will aid in promoting our school mission of producing knowledgeable, responsible and competent pupils. We constantly stress the importance of reading to them and in the past we have achieved great success, with our pupils participating in readathons and publishing of books as part of local competitions. The mobile library is an amazing asset that will only strengthen our love of reading among pupils,” said principal, Ms Small.

At the unveiling of the library, grade 6 pupil, Jordan Candy thanked Sapref by reciting a poem written by teacher, Rosaline Paul and said she was excited to have a library that can be taken from class to class.

“This initiative, worth R4.5-million, supports the quality of learning and teaching. They are part of a wider response by Sapref to the call to uplift conditions in schools, especially in the areas of literacy. We wanted our 50th anniversary celebrations to impact the wider KZN province, and doing this via investments in schools was in line with our broader social investment programme,” said Sapref MD, Robin Mooldijk.
