Illovo Sugar - Partnership for Primary Health Care

2013-11-15

IN a classic example of good partnership, Illovo Sugar Malawi has become part of an important health care project originated by the UK-based AMECA Trust in collaboration with the Kaombe Traditional Authority, located in the Lower Shire River region, not far from our Nchalo operations.

The project involves the establishment of a primary healthcare clinic complex adjoining The Kaombe Community Farm and is to be built on eight hectares of community land donated by the Kaombe Traditional authority. With part financial sponsorship provided by Illovo and the Kaombe Community Farm Trust, and subject to securing further adequate donor funding, the clinic will initially be for outpatient provision. It is hoped that, over time, the clinic could expand to provide in-patient care, specialist clinics and minor surgical procedures.

The donation made by Illovo is to be utilised for the purchase of the medical equipment required by the clinic which, over the longer term, will promote quality community health care in a remote rural area. This development will benefit the local communities and our own employees, as well as enabling the AMECA Trust to realise its long-held aspiration to build a rural health clinic in an area of need.
