Winners of the 2015 Regional Business Achiever Awards

Celebrating the outstanding contributions made by women leaders in KwaZulu-Natal, six inspiring women were last night honoured for excelling in their areas of expertise.

Shining a spotlight on the role of the province'swomen executives, entrepreneurs and women in government, the KZN branch of the Businesswomen's Association of South Africa (BWASA) announced the winners of the 2015 Regional Business Achievers Awards (RBAA).

Attended byhundreds of businesswomen, KZN business leaders and government dignitaries, the awards in five categories were announced at a glitzy gala dinner at the Durban International Convention Centre on 24 June.

Thulisile Galelekile, Divisional Communications and Marketing Manager for Ithala Bank, won the corporate category; Vuyiwe Tsako, General Manager for Corporate Services at the UGU District Municipality, claimed the government category and Dr. Akashni Maharaj, owner of Bellair Psychology and Coaching Center, shone in the professional category.

Zanele Dlamini, owner of engineering consulting and manufacturing company ZD Project Management, and Julie Hay, founder of Singakwenza Education and Health NPC, secured the entrepreneur and social entrepreneur categories respectively.

The RBAA also recognised one bold KwaZulu-Natal woman, who has established a career focused on excellence in providing through precept and example:inspiration, direction and leadership.

Gcina Mhlophe, a Durban-born freedom fighter, activist, actress, storyteller, poet, playwright, director, author and motivational speaker has written and published over 28 powerful literary pieces was honoured as the2015 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient.

"Congratulations to all of the winners. Each of these women are pioneers in their respective industries and as an organisation that is so passionate about recognising and celebrating women leaders, we are proud to be associated with them," said Regional Chairperson Mpume Langa.

"The standard of this year's nominations was exceptionally high and this istelling of good work being done in KZN," said Langa who is the regional head of Absa Private Banking.

"This is more than just a competition, it's about celebrating each women's successes and creating a chain of women empowerment," added Langa.

The finalists were selected by an independent panel after enduring a robust judging process which included a detailed interview session discussing candidate's achievements and commitment to the sustainability of their various projects and initiatives.

"This year's finalists have shown their potential to benefit their industries and communities through innovation, leadership and sharing their skills and knowledge," said Langa.

As a proud initiative of the Businesswomen's Association of South Africa, the RBAA has actively identified and celebrated extraordinary women in leadership for 14 years.

"With this platform we seek to give women credible recognition in industry," added Langa.
Nominations were open to all business sectors, professions, community organisations and individuals who meet and exceed the RBAA criteria.

Businesswomen's Association of South Africa with 7 branches throughout South Africa, is the largest and most prominent association of business and professional women in the country. The organisation plays an active role in highlighting the current status of women in leadership and advocating on women's business issues in an effort to transform the economy.
