Solar potential

Most parts of KwaZulu-Natal have medium to high solar potential as the province receives more than its fair share of sunshine days throughout the year. Potential solar applications in the province include in rural households, tourist lodges and telecommunications.

Wind energy potential

KwaZulu-Natal has good to moderate wind power potential, especially along the coast and off shore. Identified regions for possible development include Port Shepstone, Ixopo, Umzinto, Amanzimtoti and Umgababa Drakensberg. Sufficient potential exists for electricity generation for rural and farm purposes as well as possible supply to the regional electricity grid.

Hydro power potential

The Drakensberg mountain range offers some hydro potential in the province. The potential of a 20MW hydro scheme has been identified as part of the Western Aqueduct Water Project. Micro-hydro projects would be suitable for rural and farming applications.

These renewable energy alternatives will play a more significant part in energy generation in the province in the future, especially in rural and farming areas where small-scale requirements often do not justify large-scale investment. Micro projects in wind, hydro and solar energy could provide the necessary thrust to grow local economic development in the province's rural communities.
