Ethekwini Living Legends 2012

2012-09-11

It is that time of the year again, when eThekwini Municipality honours and celebrates our  City\'s Living Legends, who have made significance contributions to their communities and have put our City on the map by being good role models locally and internationally.
As eThekwini Living Legends Awards celebrates its 5th year anniversary, we seek  to show appreciation to those men and women who have gone the extra mile in achieving their goals, and not only developing themselves, but those in their communities as well.

What is eThekwini Living Legends?

The eThekwini Living Legends Awards is an initiative of the Parks, Recreation & Culture Service Unit of eThekwini Municipality to recognise the greatness achieved by past or current residents of eThekwini in various fields of human endeavour, while they are still living.
These Awards acknowledge individuals with outstanding achievements, and those who have demonstrated a sustained and extraordinary contribution to our legacy, in various categories of expertise.

Is this the 1st year that these Awards are taking place?

The eThekwini Living Legends Awards was initiated in 2008, and has taken place each year since then in September, as part of the Unit\'s Heritage month\'s celebrations, and also forming part of the annual Celebrate Durban calendar.

Background

Having evolved into a programme, from what was previously an annual one-day event, the eThekwini Living Legends Awards forms part of the eThekwini Heritage - Our Legacy strategy, led by the Parks, Recreation and Culture Unit of the Municipality.

Pivotal to this is the tenet that to value our heritage in all its dimensions, to care for it as a treasure bequeathed to us by our ancestors, to recognize that it is our duty to transmit it intact to our children, is a sign of wisdom.

If a community is aware of the factors that have influenced its history and shaped its identity, it is better placed to engage with and build peaceful relations with other peoples and to forge its future.

When is the next eThekwini Living Legends Awards taking place?

On 8 September 2012, the 5th Annual eThekwini Living Legends Awards will be taking place at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre, Durban.
