DUBE TRADE PORT FORMALLY A SPECIAL ECONOMIC ZONE

2014-10-08

EThekwini Mayor, Cllr James Nxumalo has welcomed the declaration of the Dube TradePort as an Industrial Development Zone (IDZ) which will see the focus of economic activities leading to economic growth and job creation.

President Jacob Zuma today, 7/10/14, handed over the operator licence to the Board of the Dube TradePort Management led by its Chairperson Dr Bridgette Gasa. The President was accompanied by Mayor Nxumalo, Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies, KZN Premier Senzo Mchunu, Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry Mzwandile Masina and MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs Mike Mabuyakhulu.

Nxumalo said the launch of the Dube TradePort IDZ will promote and encourage industrialisation and generate public awareness about the Special Economic Zones and their potential impact to economic growth and job creation, through direct foreign investments.

“With some major projects earmarked including new infrastructure investments to support development in the north, particularly around the Dube TradePort Special Economic Zone and along the N3 corridor, the new dig-out port and many more, this will have a profoundly positive impact in promoting the economy and investments”, he said.

The IDZ has a huge potential not only to attract potential investors but also to provide a platform for SMMEs to access opportunities and markets.

“Our aim as the City is to position and promote Durban as the gateway for trade and investment; such projects will serve as catalyst in attracting more investors and will change the economic development prospects of the City,” said Mayor Nxumalo.

President Zuma said the launch of the Dube TradePort IDZ is one of the major steps in fulfilling the pronouncement he made during his State of the Nation Address in June this year that “the economy would take centre stage in our country for the next five years”.
