ANC KwaZulu-Natal chairperson Sihle Zikalala has been appointed the province’s economic development MEC following a Cabinet reshuffle.

He was replaced KwaZulu-natal deputy chairman Willies Mchunu.

Mchunu’s days had been numbered ever since Zikalala was elected as provincial chairperson late last year.

The two men allegedly sit on either side of a growing pro-and anti-Jacob Zuma divide in the province‚ which is likely to cost the ruling party dearly.

Willies Mchunu on Monday praised Zikalala claiming he was the “central figure” driving economic transformation in the province.

“We need to look at who has been the central figure in terms of pursuing the economic transformation agenda as decided in Mangaung (2012) and for that position the obvious person appeared to be the person who has been central to driving policy programmes of the ANC‚ and that is the honourable member Sihle Zikalala‚” he said.

The ANC in the province said it had done a “detailed assessment” of all the municipalities and provincial government departments.

It was then decided that changes needed to be made in four provincial departments.

Bongi Sithole Moloi was appointed the new sport‚ arts and culture MEC‚ Themba Mthembu for agriculture and rural development and Mthandeni Dlungwane for education.

Mxolisi Kaunda has taken over as transport MEC following Willies Mchunu’s appointment as premier.
