ARE WE GOING TO HAVE A LOCAL WINNER IN THE 2012 NONGOMA/ULUNDI ULTRA MARATHON
If there is anything that the Honourable Mayor of the Zululand District Municipality, Cllr VZ KaMagwaza-Msibi would like to do in this year’s Nongoma to Ulundi 56km Ultra Marathon is to present winners’ cheques to local athletes, especially those from the Zululand District.
Since the inception of this race more than four years ago, there has never been a winner from the Zululand District. This year’s event will be held on March 18 and those who want participate in this annual event, run under the auspices of KZN Athletics, and in accordance with the IAAF and ASA rules can still register. This race is regarded by many as a pre-qualifier to the well- known and popular Comrades and Two Oceans marathons.
The race attracts a large number of runners, especially from neighbouring countries. Reliable sources have revealed that both last year winners, Malawian Henry Moyo (males) and Margaret Mahohoma, a winner in the females section from Zimbabwe, will be among this year’s participants.
Winners in both male and female sections will pocket R20 000 while both second placed runners will walk away with R10 000 cash. Third placed runners will each pocket R5 000. Gold medals will also be awarded to the first 10 runners home while silver ones to the following 600.Besides this main event, there will be other short distance races (10km), as well as a 5km fun run.
Meanwhile, KaMagwaza-Msibi invites all Media Houses to a Media Conference at Ulundi Holiday Inn on Saturday March 17, starting at 18h00.
