UKZN Foundation - School of Education Hosts Masakhane Youth Leadership Course

2016-11-17

The School of Education, through the Community Development Association (CDA) â€" a student-run community outreach organisation, recently hosted the 15th annual Masakhane Youth Leadership Course(MYLC) for more than 200 Grade 11 learners from predominantly disadvantaged schools across KwaZulu-Natal.

During the week-long course, learners benefited from enriching activities and teaching from some of UKZN’s best academics. Topics included gender and leadership, violence in schools, managing and embracing diversity, transformative leadership, youth activism and entrepreneurship.

Acting Dean and Head of the School, Professor Thabo Msibi, said: ‘The MYLC does not only train potential South African leaders for their leadership roles in schools, but
also equips them for leadership positions in the future â€" a crucial approach given South Africa’s current youth leadership crisis. ‘The course exposes learners to several issues that are negatively affecting South African communities and through leadership they acquire skills and knowledge that will empower them to address those issues,’ he said. According to the CDA’s Mr Nkonzo Mkhize, the Association has been involved in a pro-active programme of developing partnerships with disadvantaged schools for the past 15 years. ‘This is to fulfil the primary purpose of fostering growth and development in schools to attempt to provide equitable distribution of resources, skills, expertise and experience to learners, teachers and schools in KZN and the University at large as well as to respond to the notion of Ubuntu,’ said Mkhize.

A learner from Zwelibanzi High School in
Umlazi, Siboniso Bhengu, was ecstatic to be a part of the leadership course. ‘I have learned so much from everybody here. I’ve also made some new friends. Attending the panels and hearing the speakers makes me feel like I can make a difference in my community.’ Another learner, Hlengiwe Phakathi of JG Zuma High School in KwaMashu, said: ‘The Leadership Course has motivated me to work harder and has taught me how to be an effective leader in my School and my community. The issues discussed were relevant to us and I will go back to my School and share it with others.’
