Durban Chamber - How to comply with Protection of Personal Information Act - 06 April

2016-03-07

Compliance with the Protection of Personal Information (POPI) Act requires that every organisation that processes personal information appoints an Information Officer. Although this is by default the head of a private body (typically the CEO), most organisations will fulfil this role by appointing one or more Deputy Information Officer to support the head of the organisation in fulfilling the roles and responsibilities of the Information Officer as described in the POPI Act.

An introduction to the POPI Act will provide Information Officers and their deputies with the knowledge and skills to address developing, publishing and maintaining a POPI Policy which addresses all relevant provisions of the POPI Act, including but not limited to the following:
  • Reviewing the POPI Act and periodic updates as published
  • Ensuring that POPI Act induction training takes place for all staff
  • Ensuring that periodic communication awareness on POPI Act responsibilities takes place
  • Ensuring that Privacy Notices for internal and external purposes are developed and published
The workshop will also address, developing, publishing and maintaining a PAIA Manual which addresses all relevant provisions of the  Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA), including but not limited to the following:
  • Meets the requirements for contents of the Manual
  • Establishing processes for information requests
  • Handling requests for information
  • Provide direction to any Deputy Information Officer if and when appointed.

Dr Peter Tobin will be presenting and highlighting why the POPI Act
should be taken seriously.

Dr Tobin has over thirty years of business and management experience across a number of different industries and in a wide range of roles. He combines real world expertise and experience with a solid grounding in global Best Practice and a clear understanding of how to achieve World Class performance, particularly in the area of IT Governance and Management and Data Privacy and Protection. Dr Tobin has published over twenty academic conference papers and journal articles and has spoken at numerous South African and
international conferences.
