"In Order to know who we are, it is important to know where we come from," said MEC for Arts,
Culture, Sport and Recreation, Ntombikayise Sibhidla - Saphetha at the opening session of the three day Information and Memory for Change Arts and Culture conference held at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre.

The event highlighted the important role played by libraries, archives, museums, language services and arts development to empower communities by providing information. The recent celebrations for the centenary of the ANC reminded delegates of the importance of preserving and treasuring our past for the future of our nation. Mayor Cllr James Nxumalo officially opened the conference and said, "The past is an important source of inspiration to seek innovative ways to assure the improvement of our City. 

The Municipality is developing several projects to ensure that our past is not underestimated, thus creating employment for our communities, like the Cato Manor Cultural Museum and Heritage Centre which aims to preserve the cultural story of Cato Manor, a massive part of Provincial Cultural Heritage. "We are the guardians of our cultural memories and we have to be sure that these assets are cared for," said Steven Sack, a cultural activist from Johannesburg. 

It is also very important to preserve the cultural diversity of South Africa, known all over the world as the rainbow nation. The conference also saw the announcement of winners in the annual Literature Competition held by the Department of Arts and Culture. There were two categories, Drama and Novel. The top three winners were presented with certificates and cash prizes. Special guest, writer and world renowned storyteller Gcina Mhlophe was presented with an award for her contribution to the arts and culture industry. 

She was referred to as a "Living Legend" and excited the gathering by telling one of her famous stories. She said, "It is all about sharing. I will share what is mine and celebrate what is yours. We must not let our heritage wither away. It is the dawn of a new year, let's take our stories to every citizen and treasure it."
