DUT:Is a vibrant multi campus tertiary institution Nurturing Holistic Education
When the Higher Education landscape changed in South Africa, ML Sultan and Technikon Natal merged to form the Durban Institute of Technology on 1 April 2002. The Durban Institute of Technology (DIT) was the only institute of technology and, after the pronouncement by the Department of Education (DoE) that former technikons will be called universities of technology, DIT re-aligned itself to become Durban University of Technology (DUT) in March 2006. This is per the vision of the university, which identifies DUT as a leading university of technology in Africa that nurtures holistic education and the advancement of knowledge.
DUT is a vibrant multi campus tertiary institution at the cutting edge of higher education, technological training and research. Seventy two academic programmes (full-time and part-time) in six faculties, on campuses in Durban and Pietermaritzburg are offered. The qualifications range from certificate courses (one year of full-time study), to National Diplomas (three years of full- time study), to Bachelors, Masters and Doctorate in Technology degrees. Financial assistance is offered to deserving students to assist in the financing of their studies.
Current Challenges:
-
Ensure that the institution is strategically positioned within a global context by maximizing the exposure of the DUT;
-
Reinforce the position of DUT as a leading university of technology in Africa, that nurtures holistic education and the advancement of knowledge;
-
Effectively educate the consumer (clients) that DUT has changed its identity from an institute to a university of technology;
-
Ensure that DUT adopts and harnesses the value and uniqueness of its status as a university of technology;
-
Build brand awareness and establish DUT as the preferred choice for tertiary education;
-
Reinforce the impact of the brand;
-
Enhance the quality of student life (influence the change in perceptions of DUT);
-
Attract and retain quality staff and promote staff advancement;
-
Increase and enhance community engagement and partnership;
-
Increase research output;
-
More adequately cater for differently able people;
-
To be conscious of the transformation agenda and instil the principle throughout the university.
Academic Achievements:
With regard to research as a core function of a university of technology, the emphasis at DUT is Applied Research and Research in Technology. The National Research Foundation (NRF) of South Africa is one of the key funders of research at the DUT .The following Research Niche Areas (RNAs) were funded by the NRF:
-
Water and wastewater technology;
-
Appropriate design education for sustainable development;
-
Materials design and manufacture;
-
Dynamical systems research; and
-
ICT Linked Development for rural KZN
-
Plant Biomass Processing.
Building Strong Relationships for the Future:
Communication is critical to the achievement of goals, and DUT has several key strategic thrusts that ensure that it builds and maintains excellent relations with all stakeholders, from donors, to students, to communities and funders. DUT has put in place a dynamic international relations office, and developed an ambassadors programme of fundraising, which includes community members and prominent persons who wish to promote special projects. DUT also foster close ties with its communities, with local and provincial government and, of course, business. DUT is committed to build a university that will fulfill, in an exemplary fashion, the three fold mission of higher education, i.e. teaching, learning
and research, as well as those unique to a university of technology such as technology transfer,innovation, applied research and community partnerships.
Social Responsibility
DUT is investing in the people of KwaZulu-Natal and South Africa through skills development, especially in rural and peri-urban communities.Harnessing and developing strategic and comparative advantages for social, industrial and technological development, DUT is bridging the Information and Communication technology digital divide. Throughout, it works diligently to protect the unique heritage in the region.
The Future
The Institutional goals chart the course that will enable the University to realise itsVision for the future and to fulfill its Mission. Responding to the transformation agenda, Equity continues to be a major priority of the university. As Africans and Coloureds are the most under- privileged and disadvantaged groups, DUT is focusing on identifying potential staff from these groups. Efforts to address gender equity are also paramount in the transformation agenda. Research has already highlighted the role of women in enhancing research capacity. DUT needs to do more in identifying women for key academic positions within the university.
Mission
To serve the needs of developing societies within a dynamic global context and to enable quality teaching, learning, research and community engagement by providing quality, career-focused education; promoting a values-driven ethos, sustainable partnerships with industry, community and society, and excellence in applied and relevant research; empowering staff and students to succeed; and ensuring university sustainability.
