KZN Business Sense - COMM ITTED TO MAKING A DIFFERENCE:Roshan Morar

2016-02-18

Roshan Morar is the managing and founding partner of Morar Inc., an audit and accounting practice. He is a well respected financial expert committed to making a difference at all levels in South Africa’s economy.

This expertise has been built over the last 21 years. In 1995 Roshan Morar opened his own accountancy firm in a small office in Church Street Pietermaritzburg. The firm now employs 186 staff around the country and aims to double that figure in the coming years. With a head office in Pietermaritzburg, a newly opened office in Umhlanga and offices in Bloemfontein, Polokwane, Mpumalanga, Kimberley,
Rustenburg, Cape Town and Centurion, the firm is positioned to service a national network of clients.

Morar has obtained substantial experience in all aspects of the corporate environment, more especially in property investments and finance, risk management and private equity transactions. He has also been involved in an advisory capacity to various successful start-up businesses, including black economic empowerment
management buyouts, among others.

No client is too small

Driven by the motto “no client is too small,” the firm initially geared itself towards servicing black-owned businesses, many of which were small and mediumsized
family-owned businesses. The first family to take its business to Morar are still clients of the firm. Today, such businesses remain an important focus of the auditing and tax services work. However, clients now cover a wide spectrum of businesses and industries, ranging from the sole-proprietor to large corporations with hundreds of employees.

In line with Morar’s aim to provide value added services, the firm’s staff prides themselves on building relationships with clients and this personalised approach has been a consistent hallmark of the practice. In addition, confidentiality and the quality
of the service are all-important aspects of service delivery. “We are seen as their partners,” said Jennifer Reddy, who is the resident director of the Durban office.

Morar says of his career, “As an emerging Black entrepreneur, there were many doors that remained closed. I remained focused and determined to change this.” He
added, “Taking calculated risks, hard work and being determined to achieve success,” had driven his career. “In addition, balancing time and planning is key,” said Morar. It is clear that his journey is far from finished.

High profile board positions

His success is very much evident in the high profile board positions and board
committees on which he currently serves. Morar is the chairperson of the South
African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) to which he was appointed in March
2015. Morar is the deputy chairperson and independent non-executive director of
the Public Investment Corporation, which is one of the largest and most successful
investment managers in Africa. Furthermore, Morar has been a non independent non-executive director of Adcock Ingram Holdings Limited since April 2014. He is also the deputy chairperson of Airports Company South Africa ACSA, a position he has held since January 2012, which has become recognised as an award winning
and well functioning state-owned company.

The various committees that he serves on range from acquisitions, to commercial, audit and risk, human resources, to remuneration and nominations.

“The Board appointments have enhanced my personal and professional growth. The
experience and exposure that I have acquired as a Board member has helped build my business acumen. I hope that the contribution I am able to make serves the best
interests of the shareholders as well as stakeholders, including society, labour and the environment” says Morar.

Business acumen

The growth in his business acumen is apparent in his plans for his firm. Not only will the Durban operation eventually increase, but the ambitious Morar also plans to
further reinforce the company’s presence in South Africa â€"and has his sights set on growing the practice beyond the national borders to establish the firm as a fully-fledged African practice.

Morar aims to start with Zimbabwe, where small and medium-sized businesses still
exist, and in Nigeria, where he has identified opportunities in the market.

Services offered

Morar Incorporated helps businesses to achieve their financial goals â€" ultimately
saving them valuable time and money. The accounting solutions offered include annual financial statements, management reporting, completion and submission of
tax and other legislated returns, preparation of PAYE bi-annual reconciliation and data capture.

The capacity to analyse complex financial issues and to understand what kinds of risks a company is facing is essential in today’s business.

Morar said South African businesses need to be prepared for risks as with the economic pressures in today’s world, the potential for fraud was high.

“It is also imperative for every business to undertake a risk assessment process to determine the potential impact as a result of interruptions of time sensitive or critical business processes. Our internal audit division has now acquired the relevant CURA risk management software to document risks identified and assists with
managing these risks to ensure business continuity,” he said.

The forensic investigation services range from international cross-border transactions to national and local investigations, including employee corruption and
fraud, as well as electronic and procurement fraud.

The innovative firm also has experts skilled in interview techniques, document
review, authentication and records analysis. The latest technology in data interrogation software, monitoring and interception hardware and fund-transfer
tracking software is used.

Helping local government

In addition, Morar Incorporated’s team of staff have an excellent track record in helping local government achieve its goals by implementing the Municipal Financial Management Act and modernising municipal financial management to enable councils to maximise their capacity for service delivery. Morar Incorporated staff
also consult for all three spheres of government and conduct external audits on behalf of the Auditor General of South Africa, of which the firm is an accredited service provider.

Global exposure

Affiliated to a host of professional institutions, Morar Incorporated is also the only South African firm to become a member of IECnet, an international association of accountants, auditors and consultants. This provides the firm with global exposure to support their clients in their international businesses and also provides them with international opportunities.

It also makes Morar Incorporated the preferred service provider for international companies wanting to start trading in South Africa.

Making a difference

It is clear that under the financial guidance of Roshan Morar you are in good hands. He is well on his way to making a positive impact on South Africa’s growth and
development. He said, “I wish to make a difference at all levels; to create a legacy that would stand tall and be recognised as having made a difference. All we leave behind are our names and reputation.”
