Plenty of Treasures
Mpofana is located approximately 40 km west of Pietermaritzburg it is bounded by three municipalities, namely, uMngeni in the south, uMshwathi in the east, and Impendle in the west.
Mpofana benefits from its strategic location, which has easy access to rail, and road infrastructure. The national highway the N3, linking Durban and Gauteng, stretches through the municipal area. The road network linking Mpofana to the outlying Drakensberg areas provides the municipality with a competitive advantage in terms of tourism. The electrified railway line from Durban to Johannesburg passes through the town of Mooi River, which is the Municipality's administrative centre.
Economy
Mpofana Municipality has a number of small towns that are relatively highly developed. However, large parts of Mpofana Municipality especially the rural areas, are severely underdeveloped.Six key development objectives have been identified:
-
Economic regeneration,
-
Addressing basic social needs,
-
Providing basic infrastructure,
-
Land reform and land use management,
-
Environmental management and
-
Establishing a sustainable local authority.
Mooi River is situated in an area mostly devoted to cattle, dairy and stud farming, and the growing of potatoes and cash crops.
An integral part of the colonial farm-pioneering boom of the mid-to- late 1800s, Rosetta's future looked more secure in 1895 when Natal authorities built the Meshlyn Bridge and finally secured a place on the map a year later with construction of its still-standing hotel.
Surrounded by modern smallholdings, the village centre today features Crispin's Corner, a small shopping centre where, in addition to locally produced handicrafts an antique shop offers plenty of treasures.
Tourism
Having a bracing climate, the region is a popular destination for holidaymakers from the Highveld and the coast. Major attractions include the Kamberg Nature Reserve situated at the foot of the Drakensberg and the Zulu Falls and many others. Mooi River and Rosetta are on Route 4 of the Midlands Meander. This tourist route was started in 1985 to create a tourist market for local and indigenous crafts and industries, including weaving, leatherwork, pottery and cheese making. The Meander has been extended to offer a variety of other attractions, such as nature reserves and guesthouses and hotels based in original settler houses and barns. These offer facilities such as trout fishing, hiking and mountain bike trails. By prior arrangements visits to one of the many prestigious racehorse studs and training establishments may be made.
The municipality strategy aims to encourage investment in tourism and to create an environment for its development. Projects include the upgrading of a tourism centre, investment in a cultural village, establishment of nature viewing sites, and the development of a bio-diversity database.
A number of major tourism projects have been launched in Mpofana. These include the drawing up of a Mpofana Tourism Marketing Plan and the introduction of tourism learnerships. Others are to create a cultural village and a handicraft market, and to develop the Gongola Wilderness Reserve.
Historical and Other Places of Interest
Weston Agricultural Museum houses photographs and documents depicting the history of the school and district; the college is an old military site, and on it are British army artefacts and buildings. Rhode House Museum is the former home of Edgar Rhode, a prominent resident who chaired the first town board in 1921, and depicts local history and activities, such as dairy farming and polo.
